Markus,

do not test with lat long, use UTM or other
x,y data to test what Bob is suggesting. You can
use my DEM at 
http://www2.gis.uiuc.edu:2280/modviz/hooder/
ascii file hoodtest.ascii
and nviz state files 
hoodel*.state 

We need to get NVIZ render the standard DEMs
and then look at a fix for lat/long and small values
again.
