[SQLGRASS] database

Hi everyone!

I am a new user to grass5.  I want to use a database (other than 
postgresql if possible) to store my geo-referenced data (instead of unix
directories), is it
possible? A more basic question: what is the purpose of the database
interfaces (postgresql or odbc)?
Is there any document giving explanation on how all this work?
