[SQLGRASS] Raster maps and PG

Hello,
I am relatively inexperienced with the db.xxxx-Interface of Grass5 and could
use
some advice:
For the task of exporting data from raster maps into tables I am using a
PERL
script which basically does a
"cat CREATE TABLE mydata | db.execute" as described in the db.execute man
page.
I am using UnixODBC, with its original PG-driver.
The overall performance is incredibely slow (makes my PIII feel like an old
8bit
machine) . Are there ways to speed things up? Are there alternative
approaches?
Further, I have to get data from a PG-table back into a Grass-raster.
How can that be done except for lengthy ascii-import/export procedures?
Happy holidays,
Peter
