You need to create dbmscap file and run db.connect command first.
How to create dbmscap is described in db.connect manual page.

ODBC driver isn't compiled by default because some ODBC header
files are required. If you compile grass you can either uncomment
# src/libes/dbmi/drivers/odbc row in src/CMD/lists/GRASS before compilation
or after compilation cd to src/libes/dbmi/drivers/odbc and run gmake5
(must be in PATH)
Then driver should be located in dist.i686-pc-linux-gnu/driver/odbc
for example.
I am sending odbc driver for Linux to you off list.
